Home to the only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World, the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum, and 1,000 years of Islamic architecture. All our Cairo day tours are fully private — your group only, with a certified Egyptologist guide and hotel pickup included.
No city on earth compresses this much history into this small a space. The Great Pyramid of Giza — the only surviving wonder of the ancient world — stands on the city's edge, 4,500 years old and still the most extraordinary structure humans have ever built. Two kilometres away, the Grand Egyptian Museum, which fully opened in November 2025, houses over 100,000 artefacts including the complete Tutankhamun collection — 5,000 objects on display together for the first time in history.
Step from the ancient into the medieval: Cairo's Islamic heart — Al-Muizz Street, Al-Azhar Mosque (founded 970 CE), Khan el-Khalili bazaar — is one kilometre of continuous civilisation from the 10th to the 14th century. Then deeper still into Old Cairo's Coptic Quarter, where the Hanging Church and Ben Ezra Synagogue predate Islam by 600 years.
At Egypt Tours by Locals, our Cairo day tours and private packages are led exclusively by certified Egyptologists from Cairo University. Since 2012 we have guided 800+ Cairo groups — all fully private, no shared coaches, no fixed group sizes — with a 4.9/5 average rating across 312 verified reviews.
"Cairo rewards depth. The Grand Egyptian Museum opened in 2025 and it changes everything about how you understand Tutankhamun — the complete collection together is unlike anything else in the world. Pair that with a morning at the Pyramids and an afternoon in Islamic Cairo and you have the greatest single day in travel."
All Cairo tours are fully private — your group only. Day tours, city breaks, or multi-day packages. Each includes a certified Egyptologist guide and private air-conditioned transport.
Eight essential experiences for every Cairo visitor — with insider guidance on timing, context, and what your Egyptologist guide can show you that no itinerary can replace.
The only surviving wonder of the ancient world — built 4,500 years ago. Your Egyptologist explains the engineering mystery still debated today and ensures you see the Pyramids at the right time and from the right angles.
Fully opened November 2025 — the world's largest archaeological museum. The complete Tutankhamun collection, including his solid gold death mask, 5,000+ objects displayed together for the first time in history.
Carved from a single limestone outcrop, 73 metres long. The Sphinx guards the Giza plateau and is included in every Cairo day tour. Your guide explains the Inventory Stela and the ongoing scholarly debates about its age.
The world's first pyramid — built by architect Imhotep for Pharaoh Djoser in 2,650 BCE, 100 years before the Great Pyramid. Less crowded than Giza; extraordinary for understanding the development of pyramid architecture.
One kilometre of continuous Islamic architecture from the 10th–14th centuries. Al-Azhar Mosque (970 CE, one of the world's oldest universities), the Citadel of Saladin, and hundreds of Mamluk monuments.
Cairo's great medieval market — spices, papyrus, perfume, gold, and the best coffee in Egypt. The perfect final afternoon on any Cairo day tour with your guide navigating the labyrinthine alleyways of the old city.
Egypt's Christian heritage: the Hanging Church (St. Virgin Mary), the Ben Ezra Synagogue, and the site where the Holy Family is said to have sheltered. Predates the Islamic city by 600 years.
Memphis — Egypt's ancient first capital. The colossal Ramesses II statue and the alabaster sphinx. Combined with Saqqara on a half-day excursion from central Cairo — ideal add-on to any Cairo day tour.
Timing, logistics, and insider knowledge from our Egyptologists and local specialists — including how to reach Cairo from Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh.
Arrive at the Giza Plateau at 7–8am as the site opens — before the tour coaches arrive at 9–10am. All our Cairo day tour itineraries schedule the Pyramids first thing in the morning for this reason.
Plan 4–6 hours for the Grand Egyptian Museum. For the Tutankhamun galleries alone, allow 2 hours minimum. Combining GEM with the Pyramids in one day is possible — they are 2 kilometres apart.
October through April: 14–26°C, perfect for outdoor sites. Summer (June–August) is very hot at the Pyramids (38–44°C) but manageable with early starts. The GEM is air-conditioned and excellent year-round.
3 days covers the Pyramids + GEM + Islamic Cairo + Old Cairo. 4–5 days adds Saqqara, Memphis, and more time in the bazaar. See our Cairo city break packages for tailored options.
Cairo is 1 hour by air from both Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh. We design Cairo day tours from both Red Sea resorts — including flights, private vehicle, Egyptologist guide, and all site tickets. Depart your hotel at 5–6am and return the same evening. The Pyramids and GEM are the most popular combination.

The Grand Egyptian Museum was the most extraordinary museum experience of my life. Our Egyptologist guide spent 3 hours in the Tutankhamun galleries explaining objects that the labels don't even mention. Standing in front of Tutankhamun's solid gold death mask with this depth of commentary — it was genuinely life-changing. The Pyramids the morning before were equally extraordinary. Nothing in Europe comes close to this.
We had 3 days in Cairo as a standalone break from Frankfurt — 4.5 hours direct with Lufthansa and suddenly we were in front of the Great Pyramid. Our Egyptologist was the best guide I've encountered anywhere in 25 years of international travel. Day 1: Pyramids and GEM. Day 2: Islamic Cairo and the bazaar. Day 3: Saqqara. Perfect pacing, perfect depth. I've already booked to come back for the Nile cruise.
I'd been planning this trip for 10 years and it exceeded every expectation. The GEM is extraordinary — I can't believe it took this long to open. Our guide's knowledge of the hieroglyphics in Saqqara was at university lecture level. The Islamic Cairo walk was the unexpected highlight — Al-Muizz Street at dusk, the call to prayer echoing between the Mamluk facades. Egypt Tours by Locals is exceptional.
