Valley of the Kings

8:30 AM
Valley of the Kings

Tucked into a dry desert valley chosen for its isolation and a natural pyramid-shaped peak overlooking it, this was the burial ground of choice for New Kingdom pharaohs for close to five centuries. Maro selects three open tombs for your visit, each decorated with scenes from the Book of the Dead and other funerary texts meant to guide the king safely into the afterlife.

"Every king wanted more protection and more decoration than the last. You can trace that competition tomb by tomb as we go," says Maro Saeed, your guide.

Temple of Hatshepsut

10:00 AM
Temple of Hatshepsut

Built into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari in a striking series of flat terraces, this temple honors one of the few women to rule Egypt as pharaoh in her own right, rather than as a queen or regent. Maro highlights the relief carvings recording her expedition to the Land of Punt and the imagery she used to present herself with the traditional symbols of kingship.

"She had herself depicted with a false beard in some carvings — a deliberate choice to fit the image of what a pharaoh was supposed to look like," Maro explains.

Colossi of Memnon

Colossi of Memnon

Rising nearly 18 meters from a single block of quartzite each, these two seated figures of Amenhotep III once flanked the entrance to a mortuary temple so large that little else of it survives today. Maro shares the ancient legend of the "singing" colossus, whose cracked surface once produced a haunting sound at sunrise, drawing curious visitors from across the Roman world.

"This was basically an ancient tourist attraction too. People traveled here 2,000 years ago just to hear the statue 'sing,'" says Maro.

Lunch

12:00 PM

A relaxed lunch stop at a local restaurant on the West Bank, many with views over the Nile and the green fields separating the river from the desert. A good pause before crossing to the East Bank for the afternoon.

"This side of the river feels completely different from the East Bank — quieter, more rural. Lunch here is a nice way to sit with that contrast for a moment," Maro notes.

Karnak Temple

12:45 PM
Karnak Temple

Built up over roughly two millennia by successive pharaohs, Karnak is the largest religious complex ever constructed, dominated by the Great Hypostyle Hall's 134 towering columns. Maro gives you time to walk the hall at your own pace before pointing out the temple's obelisks, the sacred lake, and the surviving stretch of the sphinx-lined avenue.

"Numbers don't do this place justice. You need to stand under those columns and feel how small they make you," Maro notes.

Luxor Temple

Luxor Temple

Sitting directly on the Nile and once linked to Karnak by a long avenue of sphinxes, this temple was central to the ancient Opet Festival, when statues of the gods were paraded between the two sites to renew the pharaoh's divine authority. Maro walks you through the surviving colonnades and courts as the afternoon light warms the sandstone.

"Luxor Temple feels more intimate than Karnak. Smaller, but every bit as beautiful, especially with the sun lower in the sky," says Maro.
