Travel Advice for the 10 Day Egypt Itinerary

Best Time to Visit

Egypt is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is October to April, when temperatures are more comfortable for sightseeing. During these months, you can explore the ancient wonders of Egypt without the extreme summer heat.

If you plan to visit in the summer (May to September), expect high temperatures, especially in Luxor and Aswan, where daytime heat can exceed 40°C (104°F). For a more enjoyable trip, plan sightseeing in the early morning or late afternoon during the hotter months.

Packing Tips

Packing smart will make your trip more comfortable:

  • Clothing: Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Loose-fitting clothing is ideal for both comfort and cultural appropriateness.
  • Footwear: Bring comfortable walking shoes for exploring ruins, temples, and uneven terrain. Sandals are great for casual strolls, but sturdy shoes are best for full-day tours.
  • Accessories: A hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential to protect against the strong Egyptian sun. A scarf or shawl can be useful for covering up in religious sites or shielding yourself from dust.
  • Swimwear: If your itinerary includes a Nile cruise or a hotel with a pool, don’t forget a swimsuit.
  • Daypack: A small backpack will help carry water, snacks, and essentials while exploring.

Cultural Etiquette

Egyptians are known for their hospitality, but being aware of cultural norms enhances your experience:

  • Dress Modestly: While tourist sites are more relaxed, dressing modestly—covering shoulders and knees—is recommended, especially at mosques and religious sites.
  • Greetings: A simple “Salam Alaikum” (Peace be upon you) is a polite way to greet locals.
  • Photography: Always ask before taking photos of locals, especially in rural areas or markets. Some historical sites may require a small fee for photography.
  • Tipping (“Baksheesh”): Tipping is customary in Egypt. It’s common to tip hotel staff, drivers, and tour guides for good service. Keep small bills handy for this purpose.

Currency & Payments

  • The official currency is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). While credit and debit cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and large stores, cash is often preferred in local markets, taxis, and smaller shops.
  • ATMs are available in most cities, but it’s advisable to exchange some cash upon arrival for convenience.
  • US Dollars, Euros, and British Pounds are often accepted in tourist areas, but you’ll get better rates when paying in local currency.

Safety & Health

Egypt is generally a safe country for tourists, but here are some important tips for a worry-free journey:

  • Stay Hydrated: Always drink bottled water to avoid potential stomach issues. Avoid tap water and opt for sealed beverages.
  • Food Safety: Enjoy Egypt’s incredible cuisine but eat at reputable restaurants to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses. Street food can be delicious but choose vendors where food is freshly cooked.
  • Scams & Hassle: In popular tourist spots, some vendors may be persistent. A polite but firm “La, shukran” (No, thank you) will usually suffice.
  • Transportation: Use official taxis, Uber, or private tours for safe and hassle-free travel within cities.
