Valley of the Kings

9:00 AM
Valley of the Kings

For nearly 500 years, this remote desert valley served as the burial ground for New Kingdom pharaohs, chosen partly for the pyramid-shaped peak that watches over it and partly to deter tomb robbers. Maro selects three of the open tombs to visit, each with its own painted corridors and burial chamber, and explains the symbolism behind the scenes covering the walls.

"Every tomb tells a different part of the journey to the afterlife. I choose which three we visit based on what's open that day and what I think will interest you most," says Maro Saeed, your guide.

Temple of Hatshepsut

10:30 AM
Temple of Hatshepsut

Rising in three broad terraces against the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari, this mortuary temple honors one of ancient Egypt's few female pharaohs, who ruled for over two decades and commissioned some of the era's most ambitious building projects. Maro points out the reliefs depicting her divine birth and a trading expedition to the Land of Punt, part of her campaign to legitimize her rule.

"Hatshepsut had to justify her position in a way male pharaohs never did. You can see that effort carved right into these walls," Maro explains.

Colossi of Memnon

Colossi of Memnon

Two seated statues of Amenhotep III, each carved from a single block of quartzite and standing roughly 18 meters tall, are all that remain of what was once the largest temple complex in Egypt. Maro shares the story of the "singing statues" — a crack in one colossus once caused it to emit sound at dawn, drawing visitors from across the Roman Empire until repairs silenced it.

"For centuries, people traveled here just to hear these statues 'sing.' It's one of my favorite stories to tell, because it's completely true and completely strange," says Maro.

Lunch

12:30

A relaxed lunch stop at a local restaurant on the West Bank, many with views over the Nile and the green fields separating the river from the desert. A good pause before crossing to the East Bank for the afternoon.

"This side of the river feels completely different from the East Bank — quieter, more rural. Lunch here is a nice way to sit with that contrast for a moment," Maro notes.

Karnak Temple

1:45 PM
Karnak Temple

The largest religious complex ever built, Karnak was expanded by generation after generation of pharaohs over roughly 2,000 years, dedicated primarily to the god Amun-Ra. Its centerpiece, the Great Hypostyle Hall, holds 134 massive columns arranged in dense rows, some tall enough to dwarf a multi-story building. Maro gives you time to walk the hall slowly before covering the temple's obelisks, sacred lake, and avenue of ram-headed sphinxes.

"No photo captures this hall properly. You have to stand under those columns and look straight up to understand the scale," Maro notes.

Luxor Temple

Luxor Temple

Set directly on the Nile's east bank and connected to Karnak by the Avenue of Sphinxes, this temple was built largely for the Opet Festival, an annual celebration renewing the pharaoh's divine right to rule. Maro times the visit for late afternoon, when the low sun brings out the warm tones of the sandstone columns and colonnades.

"This is the temple I'd choose to see the light hit just right. Late afternoon here is completely different from midday," says Maro.
